Single Champions of the 5th Mariflex Darts Open invited for Zuiderduin Masters 2011

The promoters of the Zuiderduin Masters and the organizers of the forthcoming MariFlex Open have announced that the winners of the 2011 Mariflex Open will be awarded a direct invitation to play in the 2011 Zuiderduin Masters which will be played in Egmond aan Zee in early December.

The Zuiderduin Masters is an invitation event where qualification is through the the Zuiderduin Masters Ranking Tables, the Dutch Champions League of Darts or a very limited number of wildcards.

The Zuiderduin Masters is broadcasted live by RTV Noord Holland and is also streamed live to a worldwide audience via the internet. This makes the event a huge opportunity for talented players to promote themselves.

A good example is the latest “Dutch Comet” Jan Dekker. This young talent received a wildcard into last year’s Zuiderduin Masters as a result of his performance at the 2010 Winmau World Masters and Lakeside play off event. The experience he gained playing on a world stage in front of the TV cameras gave Jan the confidence he needed to reach the Semi-Finals of this year’s Lakeside World Professional Championships.

The 5th MariFlex Open starts on Saturday the 19th of March with the pairs and mixed pairs. The Main events, the Singles, are played on Sunday 20th March. The darts will be preceded by a very special International Football match

between England and the Netherlands. This match will be played on Friday 18th March at the Mariflex Stadium which is the home of Roosendaal Football Club. The match will kick off at 15.00 and will feature many prominent darts players from both England and the Netherlands. The match will be followed the Mariflex Open Kick-off Party which will be held at the nearby “Veerhuis Oud Gastel at 20.00.

The photos show England star Darryl Fitton (with the ball), and Jan Dekker.

Martin Adams with Bob Potter and Barbara Leitch (Lakeside Leisure Complex)

Martin Adams joined an exclusive club of three times winners as he won a 131-minute thriller against debutant Dean Winstanley 7-5.

But the 54-year-old veteran from Peterborough, the 1/2 on favourite was made to work for his victory after seeing the third seed reverse a 2-0 deficit and twice lead the match.

After firing home the title-winning double eight he declared: “I am still the old geezer of this tournament and Deano had me under the cosh but the job of a pro player is to find a way back, which I what I did.

“I said to myself, this is not over yet. You have done it before and you can do it again.

“This win means so much. It is title number three which equals people like Eric Bristow and John Lowe. Now I want to win it three times in a row next year to equal Eric’s record.” Read more

Giant of darts Gulliver lifts ninth world crown

Trina with Bob Potter and Barbara Leitch (Lakeside Leisure Complex)

Trina Gulliver chalked up her ninth world championship in 11 years toppling Welsh international Rhian Edwards 2-0 in 23 minutes.

In a repeat of last year’s final Gulliver from Somerset justified her top seeding but was made hard to work for the victory by the impressive Welsh player.

Remarkably Gulliver, the giant of women’s darts has appeared in every final since the women’s competition was launched in 2001.

The diminutive Welsh sharpshooter took the opening leg of the match with the throw, Gulliver powering in 123 and 140 scores, nervously requiring three darts for the set-levelling double 16. She then annexed the third on double 10, against the throw.

A rare three missed doubles were forgotten as the defending champ hit double four to take the the first set.

Throwing first in the second set Gulliver edged 1-0 ahead, Edwards holding her throw in the next and powering down to a finish before the top seed pulled off a dramatic 100 checkout finished on double 10 for a 2-1 set lead.

The players matched scores in the next leg, Edwards missing two shots for double tops to save the match, Gulliver missing double tops but clinching the title on double 10.

A tearful Gulliver said: “It is fantastic and a great feeling to retain the title.

“All the championships are special to me but I want to dedicate this championship to my Mum who has not been well.

“I am hungry for more world titles, “ declared Gulliver menacingly.
