From April 15th to April 17th 2011 the 23rd BULL´S German Open was held at Bochum. It was more than 800 men and about 160 women who had inscribed for the singles on Saturday.
Defending Champion Dean Winstanley went out 1:3 in round 1 against Markus Harris from England. Martin Adams, Champion 2001 and 2007, lost 2:3 in the last 32 against Steve Douglas. The semifinals saw a great match when Tony O´Shea won 2:1/2:1 with an average of 30.32 against Gary Thomson (Av. 29.88). The other semi with two Dutchmen at the Oche was won with the same result by Benito van de Pas (Av. 24.55) against Jan Dekker (24.11). In the final it was Newcomer Benito van de Pas, who won the first two Sets 2:1 and 2:0 agaist Tony O´Shea. But Silverback came back and levelled the score by 2:0 and 2:0 to 2-2 by sets, beginning set 3 with two 180s in a row. The last set had to be won by two clear legs. With Tony being 2:1 in front, it was Benito who won the next 3 legs in a row, finishing 87 for his first big WDF/BDO title (Averages: Benito 31.74 – Tony 31.97).
In the women´s singles Bianka Strauch was best German, losing the quarterfinal 0:3 against Lorraine Farlam. Lorraine also won the semifinal 2:1 and 2:0 against Aileen de Graaf from the Netherlands. Her opponent in the final was Deta Hedman, who won her semi 2:0/2:0 against Karen Lawman. The final was clearly dominated by Deta, winning 2:0 and 2:0 against Lorraine, achieving an average of 25.37 (Lorraine 21.84). For Deta, who already reached the final 1994 and 1996, it was the first German Open title.
On Sunday there were nearly 100 boys and over 30 girls competing for the youth titles. In an all-dutch boy´s final it was Tim van de Hoek (Av. 27.48) winning 2:1, 1:2 and 2:1 against last year´s champion Jeffrey de Zwan (Av. 26.21) and displaying an 128-finish for the match. Best german Player was Manuel Stangl as third.
In the girl´s final German newcomer Lisa Grey won set 1 by 2:0. But Kaylee de Priester from the Netherlands equalled by sets, winning Set 2 by 2:0. The title finally went to Kaylee (Av. 18.61) winning set 3 by 2:1 checking 86 for the match against Lisa (Av. 17.94).
Also on Sunday there were the pairs competitions. Nearly 250 men´s and more than 50 women´s pairs had inscribed. In the men´s pairs Martin Adams and Ross Montgomery (Av. 30.43) won the title 2:1 and 2:0 against Ross Smith and Jamie Lewis (Av. 28.87). Best German pair were Maik Langendorf and Tomas Seyler, who just like Tony O´Shea and Darryl Fitton became third.
The women´s title went just like last year to Deta Hedman and Karen Lawman (Av. 21.78) who won the final 3:0 against Irina Armstrong and Lorraine Farlam (Av. 18.35). Best German ladies were Kerstin Engbers and J.Wagener who became third just like the Dutch Francis Hoenselaar and Karin Krappen.
There also had been three additional tournaments. On Friday Belgiums Huybrechts/Huybrechts won the Warm-Up-Pairs against Germany´s Erkelenz/Seyler. On Saturday the winner of the additional single was was Ronny Huybrechts who beat the German top-youth May Hopp 3:0. The additional single on Sunday saw a 3:1 victory of Stuart Kellett against Brian Preece.
Once again it was a great weekend at the BULL´S German Open, well run for the 22nd time by the organizers of the 1. DSC Bochum e.V.
