Ross Montgomery and Aileen de Graaf Dutch Open Darts Champions

PRESS RELEASE DUTCH OPEN DARTS 2014
NEDERLANDSE DARTS BOND
RIJSWIJK – 2 februari 2014

Ross Montgomery and Aileen de Graaf won the 36th edition of the Dutch Open Darts. For Ross the Boss it is his second major win on Dutch soil after winning the Zuiderduin Masters some years ago. Aileen de Graaf takes the title exactly 10 years after the last Dutch title was won by Francis Hoenselaar. A packed venue at ‘the Bonte Wever’ in Assen in the North of the Netherlands with enthusiastic fans witnessed the matches.

Scotland’s Ross Montgomery could barely control his emotions after the winning dart, very happy with his achievement. Waites did not manage to put his name among the two times consecutive winners of the event after Martin did this in 2010 and 2011. Ross “the Boss” took the ranking points, the trophy and the €5000,- back to his hometown Greenhills in Schotland.

Aileen de Graaf from the idyllic town Bunschoten-Spakenburg showed that she is part of the World top ladies players. She already won the 2013 Zuiderduin Masters. In an incredible exciting ladies final it looked as if her opponent would walk away with an easy win and a third title after 2005 and 2008 wins. From 4-2 up, missing matchdarts in three consecutive legs it was Aileen who took advantage on all three occasions. De Graaf earns with this win ranking points and the cheque of €2250,-.

On Friday the tournament started with the pairs event and it was concluded the same day. Out of the 1012 contenders it was the English pair Richie George and Scott Mitchell who took the main prize. The ladies title went to the Russian/English pair Anastasia Dobromyslova/Lorraine Farlam.

On Saturday 2434 men and 279 ladies played their matches in the singles event. On Sunday the singles were concluded and also the youth played their event. An impressive amount of 375 youth players. The youth finales were also played on the main stage in front of 2800 enthusiastic spectators.

Scott Waites and Trina Gulliver win Dutch Open Darts 2013

Winners DO13Scott Waites and Trina Gulliver are the champions of the 35th edition of the Dutch Open Darts. Waites was in a thrilling final too strong for his component James Wilson. Nine-times Lakeside champion Gulliver stood for the fifth time with her hands in the air at the Dutch Open Darts stage, after previous victories in 1999, 2007, 2009 and 2011.

In the final Gulliver was too strong for Loraine Farlam and in the semifinals she managed to beat Deta Hedman. Farlam managed to win from the Dutch lady Aileen de Graaf in the semi-finals. Gulliver took in the final a quick 3-0 lead and it seemed to become an easy victory. Farlam, however, came back strongly but in the end she lost from the 42-year-old Gulliver. A day earlier, the English lady became also pairs champion with Zoe Jones. Gulliver won next to ranking points also € 2250, – in the singles tournament and € 750, – for the couples victory.

The final between Scott Waites and James Wilson was an exciting battle. It certainly was not an easy victory for the Lakeside champion. Wilson took the lead but in the deciding set Waites was stronger. With his second Dutch Open Darts title Waites wins € 5,000.

Earlier today the youth tournament was played. A total of 203 participants played in the youth tournament divided into three categories. It was a very international field with three winners from different countries. Champions were here the Russian Mikhail Kuriticin, Casey Gallegher and the Dutchman Quin Wester.

Youth Finals:
Mikhail Kuriticin (Rus) – Viani van den Bergh (Bel) 3-2

Casey Gallagher (Eng) – Fenna Bouwman (Ned) 3-0

Quin Wester (Ned) – Colin Roelofs (Ned) 4-3
