Ross Montgomery (Scot)  bt Fabian Roosenbrand (Neth) 3-1

Ross the boss lays down the law to topple Dutch ace Fabian

Ninth seed Ross “The Boss” Montgomery brushed aside Dutch painter Fabian Roosenbrand 3-1 in an entertaining 35-minute encounter.

But after the match the Glaswegian admitted: “I will need to sharpen up my doubles for my next match with Tony (O-Shea) or he will punish me.

“When I was 2-0 up I thought I was in command but Fabian came back well. Overall I felt that I deserved to get past the first round,” said a smiling Montgomery.

Ross bossed his younger opponent into submission in the opening set, firing out a maximum en-route to a 3-0 success after Roosenbrand missed double 10 for a set-saving 100 checkout.

He racked up his fourth successive leg but the young Dutchman swept back to level against the throw and then produced a pulsating 83 pressure checkout finished on bull. Ross replied with his second maximum of the match, going on to level the set and then blasting out his third 180.

Roosenbrand defiantly hit a maximum, Montgomery firing in his fourth 180 before both players nervously missed a string of doubles before the Scot scrambled to double four to edge into a 2-0 match lead.

The determined Dutchman unleashed his second 180 en-route to taking a 2-0 third set lead as the ninth seed continued to miss doubles, taking his third successive leg with a 79 checkout completed on double tops, his success against the throwing advantage.

The man from the Lowlands maintained the momentum, taking the opening leg of the fourth set with double 20 but then The Boss took charge notching an 81 checkout on bull.

The bespectacled Scot refocused in the next, firing out his fifth 180 as he took the third leg against the throwing advantage to move into a potential match-winning 2-1 set lead. But Roosenbrand capitalised on a match-winning missed attempt for his favourite double tops from Ross to hit double 10 with his third dart.

Superior scoring from Montgomery steered him ahead and he booked his second round spot with his second throw for double 16.
